Day Night Day Night

directed by Julia Loktev

with Luisa Williams, Josh P. Weinstein

A young American woman gets off a bus from somewhere in the West and is taken to a hotel somewhere in New Jersey where she waits for a group of hooded men to present her with a backpack of explosives and nails. Her mission is to blow herself up in Times Square. The film follows the nameless girl as she makes her way through the city, battling fear and doubt. Shot in part on digital video on the streets of New York, the images are even more chilling for the fact that she is walking amongst real people, people who had no idea they were in a movie, potentially about to be blown up. Russian-born American filmmaker Loktev provides only spare dialogue, preferring to tell the story with Dreyer-like close ups of the nameless girl's face. "A masterfully crafted exercise in dread unlike anything you're likely to have seen before. If you've seen Paradise Now, you may think you've been down this road, but Day Night Day Night takes the viewer, believe me, down an altogether different dead end street."
