Dardasha, Socotra

directed by Safaa Fathy

with filmmaker Safaa Fathy

The film presents the Yemeni island of Socotra (a member of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves) through a series of conversations ("dardasha" in Arabic) with its inhabitants. They offer surprising insights into their relationship with nature, each other, their language, their past, and the changes taking place. Their conversation is by turns funny, moving or poetical. The traditional form and roles of documentary filmmaking are abandoned, as the director answers as many questions as she asks, and finds out as much about herself as about the island and islanders.
