Bill Brown on a tour of nine New York venues.
Brown will present his new documentary THE OTHER SIDE
and his short films MOUNTAIN STATE, BUFFALO COMMON,
CONFEDERATION PARK and ROSWELL.
THE OTHER SIDE (2006)
A 2000-mile journey along
the U.S./Mexico border reveals
a geography of aspiration and
insecurity. While documenting
the efforts of migrant activists
to establish a network of water
stations in the borderlands of
the southwestern U.S., Brown
considers the border as a
landscape, at once physical,
historical, and political.

MOUNTAIN STATE (2003)
A brief history of the
westward march of the
United States across
West Virginia,as told by
25 roadside historical
markers and the restless
ghosts who haunt them.

BUFFALO COMMON
(2001)
With the end of the Cold War,
North Dakota's last reliable
cash crop--its stockpile of
Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missiles--
went bust. As the former missile silos
are blown up, peace activists,
wheat farmers, Air Force officers,
and demolition derby drivers
all stake claim to this state’s
widescreen landscape.
CONFEDERATION
PARK (1999)
A hobo kid follows the Trans-Canada
Highway,
the longest highway in the world,
across a landscape littered with
terrorist bombs
and miniature golf courses.
He discovers that Canada isn’t
so easy to find,
even when you’re right in the middle of it.
ROSWELL
(1994)
A space alien’s ill-fated joyride through the skies of New Mexico
prompts
an amnesiac in a pick-up truck to go looking for answers.
Bill Brown is a filmmaker from the “Paris of the Plains,” Lubbock, Texas. He has made several short experimental documentaries about the dusty corners of the North American landscape. Along with filmmaker Tom Comerford, Brown created the Lo Fi Landscapes tour, traveling across country in 2002 and 2005 with a program of short films concerned with history and place. The Museum of Modern Art hosted a retrospective of Brown's work in 2003 as part of its MediaScope series.
Bill Brown is currently touring the country on his bicycle with THE OTHER SIDE. More information about the PEDAL POWERED MOVIE TOUR can be found at http://homepage.mac.com/r.maisano
