Phil
Solomon is one of the most prominent experimental filmmakers working in the
US today. A graduate of the prestigious filmmaking program at SUNY Binghamton,
he has been a Professor of Film Studies at the Univ. of Colorado at Boulder
since 1991, where he collaborated with the late Stan Brakhage on several films.
He works directly with the film emulsion to create lyrical pieces that resonant
differently with each viewer. He is currently working on a feature length series
of short films entitled The Twilight Psalms, a cine-poem to
the 20th century, and was recently commissioned by the Corcoran Gallery of Art
to create a six-channel digital installation, which he calls The American Falls.
Tonight’s program will include two pieces from the Twilight
Psalms series and one of his collaborations with Stan Brakhage,
as well as three other pieces. Cosponsored with the CNYPG, a program of the
Electronic Media & Film Program of the New York State Council on the Arts
and Cornell Cinema.
