The Mystery of Kaspar Hauser

directed by Werner Herzog

with Bruno S., Brigitte Mira

This provocative drama is based on the legend of a young man who appeared in a small German town in the 1820's with no memory and no knowledge of the outside world. No Nell, Kaspar Hauser could not speak and was barely able to stand. Taken in by the townspeople, he was taught to speak, read and write. Kaspar can be seen as the prototypical Herzog outsider: played by non-actor Bruno S., a man with a background incredibly similar to Kaspar's, Kaspar is a wildly human and mysteriously animal man. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 1975 Cannes Film Festival.
