The film is set in 1982, when Turkey was ruled by a military junta whose constitution is still in force even today. The local military want a local music group to form a proper orchestra. The leader of the orchestra hears a tune he likes and decides to play it in a welcoming ceremony. However, the tune he heard was played by members of one of the socialist groups driven underground by the military coup, and it is in fact the Communist song the "Internationale," though he does not realize this. In fact, the title of this film, "Beynelmilel" means "International" in obsolete Ottoman Turkish. Up until the collapse of the Soviet Union, "making Communism propaganda" was a serious offence in Turkey, and playing this song leads to tragic consequences in this film. 35mm
