Cornell Cinema has partnered with the Turkish
Student Association at Cornell and the New York City based Moon and
Stars Project, an organization dedicated to highlighting Turkish arts
and culture, to bring a weekend of recent Turkish films to campus. Two
of the films were just screened at the 8th Annual New York Turkish Film
Festival: Organized Jobs and Istanbul Tales.
The former is an absurdist comedy set within the world of organized
crime in Istanbul, and the latter is five interconnecting fairy tales,
also set in the magnificent city of Istanbul.
The third film, Innocence,
is an older title by one of Turkey’s most acclaimed filmmakers,
Zeki Demirkubuz. Featuring remarkable performances by its leads, the
film tells an unusual, melancholic love story that garnered multiple
festival awards when it was released in 1997. Kick-off this special
weekend of films at a reception hosted by the Turkish Students
Association, Friday, November 3 at 6:30pm in the lobby of Willard
Straight Theatre. The reception will feature ethnic food and Turkish
dancing. It is open to the public, with the purchase of a ticket to
that night’s film, Organized Jobs. Special thanks to Cagdas Kafali for all of his work on this series. Support for this series provided by the Turkish Cultural Foundation.
